YES!! Over 35% of the people who have hearing loss is caused, at least in part, by the exposure to hazardous sound levels. Sound is measured in Decibals, and a normal human ear can hear 0 db (decibals) and in comparison most of the rock concerts are 110 db or more. Most experts consider sound levels above 85 dB hazardous, especially when exposed to them for long periods of time.
Hazardous noise can be anything from loud music to the sounds of the lawn mower. Some people think that it takes many exposures to the loud sound to cause hearing loss, but this is not true. One exposure could possibly result in a permanent hearing loss. Another misconception is that you have to be listening to rock music, or be a rock musician to induce a hearing loss. Even classical music fans and musicians are at risk and should wear hearing protection when exposed to loud music. Constant or even occasional loud sounds can damage your hearing beyond repair.
At first the hearing loss may only be temporary, and will probably be accompanied by ringing in your ears (tinnitus). Your hearing will probably return to normal and the ringing will stop after a few days. These conditions are insidious however, and if exposure occurs repeatedly and often, irreversible hearing loss and tinnitus can occur gradually over time. Most people never know they have a problem until it is too late.
Most people don't thing twice about getting their eyes examined on a regular basis, and they don't hesitate to buy contacts or glasses whenever necessary. You should regard your hearing as valuable as your eyesight. Have your hearing evaluated at least once a year by an Audiologist, especially if you are routinely exposed to high level sounds. |
